THE KITE RUNNER
“The kite Runner “written by Khaled Hosseini is a powerful story in terms of sensibility, respect, and drama. The story gives readers a different perspective of obedience and loyalty to different worlds but with the same meaning for one of the character of this book Hassan. The main character in this story is Amir; the son of a wealthy business man from Afghanistan. On the other hand, Hassan is the son of Ali; a servant on the house of Amir. In the story we can see a clearly differentiation in social classes between Amir as a Pashtun, a high social class against Hassan a Hazara who the Pashtun treat like slaves. The most meaningful passage in this book is that after Amir and Hassan won the kite flying competition. Hassan tells Amir they will celebrate later and he is going to run the blue kite for him. Amir calls out, “Hassan, come back with it!” and Hassan responds with his enduring loyalty, “For you a thousand times over!”(67). While Amir is celebrating for his triumph, Hassan is covering for tree boys those who Hassan has saved Amir once. Amir waiting for his kite to be found and Hassan did not come back he when looking for him but especially for his blue kite that is going to help him to gain love from his father. He asked an old man for Hassan his Hazara and points him to one direction. He found out that Hassan was captured for Assef, Wali and Kamal in a passage. Assef ask for the blue kite to allow Hassan to leave, but Hassan refuses saying that Amir Agha won the tournament and I ran the kite for him (72). Assef compared Hassan as an ugly pet that Amir plays when he has nothing to do. But Hassan makes emphasis in his friendship with him that for Assef was only a juke. All this happened when Amir was watching and did nothing to save Hassan from being sodomized for Assef. Amir had the opportunity to do something but he ran like a coward like he always be until his sins will be forgiven. This scene was the most important in the book since starting from this the life of Amir and Hassan change. The purpose of Ali of living Amir’s house is trying to save Hassan from the cowardly of Amir. God gave the opportunity to Amir to remedy all the damaged to Hassan through his son Sohrab. The end of the book give Amir run the kite for Hassan’s son and said “For you, a thousand times over,” (371) this is a way for forgiving himself for his sins and start a new life.
