We will have to mix it up just like a cake recipe.

Many of the seniors were there today, enjoying a sing-a-long and I joined in with them for about 20 minutes. A lot of fun since I like to sing!

On my first visit to the Neighborhood House I found out that Gloria, a senior herself, is president of the ‘Canteen’-a large amount of seniors that meet on Thursdays. We hope to invite her as a representative of the Neighborhood House to our presentation, as a thank you for the seniors welcoming us to their center. I found out today, Thursday, 15th, that there are no other presidents…so I hope we can do that. Professors, can we send an invitation to her?

We are still looking into ongoing care of the garden…and I have a few leads that I hope to keep clearing up tomorrow and in the next couple of weeks.

I am prepared to do ongoing care through the summer for one or two hours week if the ongoing care has not been established; however, I am expecting something to come up. As a group we have not yet discussed what our intentions for involvement will be after May 18th.

The president of the board told me today that they have several local businesses that they work with, and we may be able to get some volunteers from there. I also called the Greenburgh Nature Center and have contact with someone there too. Several other places.

The president also let me know they have contacts with the Gannett paper, to do a spread about our work at the Neighborhood House, and one of us will speak to Graziella tomorrow.

Here is our objective again: to create a garden in a senior center which will empower the seniors and offer them recreational and emotional involvement while being an example of sustainable, water-wise cultivation.

The times I have been to the Neighborhood House have been gratifying. Everyone is enthusiastic about our project, and have helped in their own small way---suggested plants that should be grown; how to turn the turf over in the bed to return the nutrients back to the earth; drawing us while we were working away one Tuesday.

I believe this project not only gives to the seniors, it gives back to the earth, and in turn, for our group, it teaches us many new skills that we can use to help our world be a sustainable world.

Broke ground

Wednesday Kevin, Usha, and I broke ground. It was boiling, and hard work, but we did it. One of the seniors, Elaine, sketched us while we were busy working. She also gave us tips on what to do with the dug up grass----fold it over, put on the border of the soil, thus will nourish the earth.

We have been waiting for the wood to come in, to make the bed, and it should be in tomorrow...so we will be buying that tomorrow, and soil, to return to The Neighborhood House and finish up making the bed.

Bought some materials

We bought some materials at Sprainbrook Nursery. We got some great feedback from Al the owner, and he has pointed us in the right direction of where to buy the right wood to make the bed. He even made a phone call for us, and assured us the wood will be in next week. I asked him if he thought we should start digging now, and he said of course!

We asked for a discount, and he is giving the project a 15% discount, plus the project will be tax exempt. We would have gone to the Neighborhood House tomorrow, but everyone is away for the holidays.

Wednesday visit

Kevin, Usha, and I met at the Neighborhood House. Not all the seniors were there. However, those who were there made suggestions about what plants to grow. We will be adding some vegetables as they have cooking classes, and they said they would like to use the herbs and veggies for this class.

We also suggested they might want to paint different designs on the planks of wood for those who are not interested in gardening. There are many talented artists at the Neighborhood House!

I am working on getting a compost bin at a reduced price, and have someone come into the center to explain how to use it.

Usha is keeping track of budjet, and looking for the right wood that is not treated. We got a lead from Sprainbrook Nursery about non-treated wood, and we hope to get more advice from them when we go to buy material. The owner said he will give us some discount. Not sure how much?

Kevin is looking into contacting the Science Barge in Yonkers in regards to creating sustainable drip-feed bottles.

We hope to get to Sprainbrook Nursery asap, at least to start on planting seeds. The Neighborhood House have windows with good sunlight to get things growing.

We are still looking for gardening tools that anyone can donate. Any Global Scholars have thoughts?

Here are our steps

Kevin, Usha, and I met on Saturday. I came up with a plan, and we have planned our schedules to meet with the seniors as a team tomorrow, Tuesday.

Here are my comments:

Eliminate questions about the Davis Scholarship. Let your interviewee bring it up (a little coaching, perhaps). Then you can ask a follow-up about the scholarship.

Keep it simple. Let your interviewee answer open-ended questions. Limit your scripted questions to 5 or 6. You can ad lib a bit when there is an obvious opportunity.

Here are the questions I would keep from your list, but you may want to further revise:

Where are you from?

What drives you to pursue your education and be successful?

What made you decide to attend WCC?

What has your experience at WCC been like?

What challenges in life have you overcome to get where you are today?

What are your plans after WCC? (my addition, trying to get some life goals)

Remember that you don't want enough footage of each interview, but too much footage will be impossible to edit in the time you have.

Other groups, please feel free to post additional comments on this post.

Operation: GET FIT kicks off tomorrow with our orientation meeting Room AAB 306 @ 11 AM!!!

Tomorrow, Wednesday February 24, Operation: GET FIT begins and hopes to inspire students to become healthier. Professor Theresa Cousins, head of the Foods and Nutrition Curricula here at Westchester Community College, will be our expert at the meeting. This initiative is student-ran but to help students feel more secure about the information they are receiving, a professional registered dietician will attend and speak at the meeting tomorrow. Here is an outline of the topics that will be discussed tomorrow by Professor Cousins:

We plan to accomplish this via a motivational recycling art project. This project will not only help them to develop themselves, but also contribute to society. The children will be proud and honored to have their art work displayed in the new Gateway Center or student art center (AAB) at Westchester Community College. This is a long term vision where Leake and Watts will participate with other WCC volunteer students each year to encourage the brightest, most needed students to succeed. Ultimately this project will be a symbol that future generations of children can look to and find inspiration in.

Mission Statement

Our aim is to educate current and prospective students with a film regarding the possibilities that WCC offers. We will achieve this through the representation of the adversity overcome by each member in the Kathryn W. Davis Global Community Scholars Program. We will highlight the aspects that stand to benefit those who hope to participate in this wonderful program. Aspects such as affordable schooling, international understanding, serving the community in innovative ways, and all of the different other aspects involved with participating in this program. Our hope in the end is, that those who held reservations about a "community college" will see WCC for what it truly is, an established accredited learning institution that utilizes the best in all mediums of education.

Operation: GET FIT

Operation: GET FIT is an initiative that is to be implemented during Spring 2010, to get students pro-active about their physical health pertaining to eating and exercise. This initiative is designed to promote healthier lifestyles by creating exercise programs on campus for students and by encouraging students to attend small seminars on healthy foods, healthy cooking, ways to increase their nutritional intake and diet-related diseases that are prevalent in our society and in campus. This initiative hopes to combine the talents and efforts of Registered Dieticians on campus (teachers), students in the Foods & Nutrition curricula, students interested in pursuing a career in physical education and members of the WCC students who wish to better their health.

The Framework for Operation: GET FIT

To spread awareness we will advertise in the school newspaper and put up flyers around campus spreading the word that Operation: GET FIT is coming this spring.

Starting in the Spring 2010, this initiative will run for one semester. There will be a kick-off meeting where we the group members will give an overview of the group goals for the semester. There will be a list of dates of activities; seminars and exercise programs that will be available for the participants.

The participants will be assessed by a Foods and Nutrition student who will collect the Anthropometrics (height, weight and body mass index (BMI))

We will then work along with a RD and Food and Nutrition students to analyze the information collected. This will give Nutrition students real life practice for future jobs and a chance to see how things that they are learning in class can be applied to real life.

There will be an email address and a website available for participants to contact us where they can share their questions and concerns even their successes. We will use the advise the help of a Food and Nutrition teacher or RD to properly address their questions and concerns.

There will exercise programs available during each week of Operation: GET FIT. The plan is to alternate the activities each week. One week we will be involved in some form of physical activity and the next week will we engage in an information seminar.

This initiative is a stepping stone towards a permanent program that is hoped to develop from this. For this program to continue, it is the hope that future students of the Food and Nutrition curricula take the responsibility to keep it going.

Operation: GET FIT is about getting Westchester Community College students healthier. It is about dispelling the myths about food and exercise and shedding light on diseases that are becoming more prevalent in our society, especially on our campus. Operation: GET FIT is about education and personal commitment. Whether this initiative helps 100 people or just one, it is a worthy cause and definitely something that will have a lasting impact here at WCC.

So far we have met with Professor Cousins who is the head of the Food and Nutrition Department to give her an overview of the project. She thinks that it is a feasible project and has agreed to work along with us. We are going to start advertising when school resumes after the Christmas break. We are also going to sign up for a table at Club Day so that we can continue to inform and recruit participants. We are putting together a consent form for the participants to sign saying that they have spoken to their primary care physician and that there is no problem for them to participate in the project. Professor Cousins also suggested that we speak to Prof. Slavin, the Associate Dean of Student Development and Support Services, to make him aware of the program and for him to give us guidelines as to whether or not it is necessary for us to have malpractice insurance, just as a precautionary measure. We will plan a meeting with him as soon the Spring semester starts or if possible, before. We are also going to meet with the Food and Nutrition students to give them an overview and to get volunteers. This program would also be good for them because they could also earn community service hours for being a part of it.

After our Club Day event we are going to officially start the program the following week.

Our group is currently working to initiate an annual program in cooperation with the Jacob Burns Film Center that would involve a yearly short film created by the Hispanic community. We see it as a kind of "state of the union" style film in which the Hispanic community annually speaks directly to the Westchester population regarding current issues of interest and concern to the community. We hope that it will begin a yearly dialogue within the Westchester community that would serve to ease the transition of immigrants to life in Westchester. In addition, we hope the project will give Westchester a fresh perspective on the Hispanic community, by helping to acclimate each to the others’ views and concerns thereby integrating people from both communities without the fear of losing cultural identity. People could find ways to not just understand each other, but also to work together on these issues. In order to help understand how to best facilitate this yearly dialogue, group members Leslie Rodriguez and David Monges have agreed to participate in training sessions for open discussions geared towards the maintenance of healthy channels of communication through a program known as “Campus Conversations on Race.” These annual dialogues will then serve as the impetus for all participants to become instruments for positive social change.

The vehicle for this change will be, in turn, the aforementioned short documentary, screened at the Jacob Burns Film Center. What we will do is assist the Hispanic community in the creation of this short while we would be involved in the technical process. We will help the participants from the community to shoot, plan and edit the movie in which members of the community talk about current issues that affect them in Westchester and in the country in general. For example, participants could focus on how policies on health care and immigration reform have directly impacted their lives and those of their families here and abroad, in addition to other issues of interest. The goal in this is to allow the Hispanic community to address the most current issues as they are unfolding. One potential direction that this year’s short film may take could be to engage in the debate surrounding the possible passing of the Dream Act. Through the enactment of this Act, undocumented immigrants who arrived in the United States as children and have been in the country for at least five years may obtain conditional residency for six years, the stipulation being that he/she complete at least two years of higher learning or military service. As a group, we would like to seriously consider the ramifications of the Dream Act on the Hispanic community and how the community in turn feels about the opportunity as seen through the eyes of both the older and younger generations of Hispanics here in Westchester.

Another focal point of the short documentary may be to explore how various organizations have helped with adjusting to life in the community, and plans for future involvement and contributions within the Westchester community. This would enable members of the Hispanic community to demonstrate that they are more than a "population demographic." An additional benefit is that participants would have an integral role in the creative process and the opportunity to be on both sides of the camera, not just as the subject of a film. Through this program we plan to help empower community members and give them a voice by which they can speak directly to the community, thereby becoming more visible and active participants. By asking questions of Westchester residents, community members are speaking, in essence, directly to the county as a whole. In contrast to a more traditional documentary in which people might pose questions to the Hispanic community, our program at the Jacob Burns Film Center would enable members of the Hispanic community to not just relate their story but to create their story, potentially effecting the course of it altogether.

We have spoken to Neighbor's Link, the Hispanic Resource Center and El Centro Hispano about their participation and these groups enthusiastically endorsed the idea; all three organizations are hoping to begin as soon as possible, with the cooperation of the Jacob Burns Film Center. Additionally, we are currently reaching out to other organizations that could benefit from this project, such as the Westchester Hispanic Coalition and Don Bosco. We believe the program has the potential to affect concrete and significant understanding among Westchester’s residents.

The Reestablishment of the Ronald McDonald Family Room

Hello Davis Scholars:Our group has decided to join forces with the Ronald McDonald Family Room at the children’s hospital in Valhalla. We are working together in helping to reestablish the facility that was destroyed in 2004. It had been located on the 3rd floor of the children’s hospital, but due to a burst pipe, the facility was destroyed. Now, they are in the process of building a new site which will be situated next to the Maria Ferari Children’s hospital and will be able to help families who are going through the devastating reality of having an ill child. On October 20, we me with the directors of the family room, Marielena, and Karen, and discussed our positions as volunteers. Our preconceived notion was that we would be working “hands-on” with children. That is how our group came together to begin with. We all had a desire to concentrate on a program which centered upon children. When we heard we would assist in the reestablishment, we were hesitant, but then gave the matter more thought. The severity of the chance to be a part of something as special as this organization, and watching it being built from the ground up is a once in a lifetime opportunity. We all decided we had to take on this project and are very excited by the future prospects of such an endeavor. Our weekly volunteer service consists of mainly clerical work such as designing pamphlets, composing thank you letters, and mailings. The wonderful thing about this opportunity is the chance we have in connecting with our advisors, and interacting with numerous enthusiastic volunteers. We have all adjusted well to the clerical aspect of the job and are happy to soon assume further responsibilities. For example, a presentation needs to be drawn up (through the means of power point) for the board to see the progression and future plans for the facility. Karen has informed us that we will oversee this project and be involved in the execution of the presentation. In the spring, there is a golf outing which has already begun to be planned as volunteers are a necessity in success. Also, we are going to donate our time at local McDonald Restaurants selling bracelets which will benefit the family room.On December 5, 2009, The Ronald McDonald Organization sponsored a Home for the Holidays Fundraiser. This event was an all day “Extravaganza” that featured local dance troops from all over the area who performed for an eager audience. Ronald McDonald made a surprise visit as well as the Rockettes who came to the event for a meet and greet. Local merchants graciously donated gorgeous gift baskets varying in content. These were the centerpieces of the raffle. Participants were granted the chance to donate to a wonderful cause and possibly win an extravagant prize! We are elated to say that the event was a success and helped pave the way toward the reestablishment of the Family Room. In hopes of spreading the word regarding this organization, we invited Ernie, a reporter from WCC school newspaper, The Viking to attend the event on December 5th. She interviewed the executive director, Marielena and has composed a wonderful article that will run in the January issue of the paper. She concentrates not just on the event, but the need for further assistance in a way that is unassuming. We are also happy to say that she was also the proud recipient of a gift basket! We were involved from start to finish on this enormous task. On Friday, December 4, we assisted in setting up the event which lasted from 12:30-7pm. We set up tables, organized baskets, sorted raffles, decorated the room, and arranged pamphlets. On Saturday, the event progressed from 10am -8pm. As volunteers we greeted people, assisted with the Girl Scout Bake Sale, directed the dance troops, and helped confused individuals sort through the numerous gift baskets. We also acted as floaters, standing in for anyone who needed a break or another activity to attend to. On Sunday, we cleaned the banquet room, called the winners of the baskets, and stored the remaining baskets in the storage room. In total, we devoted 30 hours of volunteer service that one weekend! We were excited, amazed, and exhausted! This project allows for us to see a world we were unaware of, which consist of a foundation which functions by means of donations from generous volunteers. We did not realize that the Family Room solely functioned under these circumstances. The beautiful thing is the amount of people who offer to donate time, cash, or items. We get the chance to interact with these people and truly see humanity in the faces of ordinary, everyday people. Our overall goal is to continue collaborating with the organization until the conclusion of the spring semester, attend the grand reopening in October 2010, and come visit the new global scholars for the 2010-2011 school year to inform them of our knowledge. We all agree that we do not want to end here; we would love for this relationship to prosper between the Family room and the scholars. By telling our story and experience, we hope to motivate new members to work with the Ronald McDonald Family Room and assist families hands on. We are laying the foundation, we want to see it rise to the top, and thrive under the assistance of present and future Kathryn Davis Global Scholars. This is our mission statement. Warm Regards,Gift, Jessica, Karonlay, and Danielle

Myself, Joana, Nadine, and Le-Sheka will be writing, filming and editing a video displaying the program we have been able to participate in (Kathryn W. Davis Global Community Leaders). The video will show the different adversities and triumphs that have allowed us to make it this far in life. The video will consist of an introduction from a student in our program and then a brief overview of the previous members. The video will then display the current members in order of their community service groups. The students in each group will be interviewed and asked a series of questions we believe will display their character as best as we can. The groups will then describe their project and what exactly they wish to achieve with their community service projects. After we have cycled through the groups, we will then have our Professors Maida and Trickel say something about the Kathryn W. Davis Global Community Leaders. The conclusion will be a montage of video from our community service projects, with one of our scholars speaking over it. After production we will present it to public schools around the county in hopes to recruit as many students as possible to WCC. This film will show the community all of the tremendous advantages here at our school, and do away with the myth that WCC is the "thirteenth grade". We hope in the end people will see just what all of us know to be true, That Westchester Community College is truly "Harvard on the Hudson". The school has the prowess and capabilities of shaping minds to be the ivy league graduates of tomorrow.

The logistics of this video will entail:

What we need from you (KWD Scholars):

One hour in the following two months to be interviewed

a schedule of when and where you will be working on your service project

and plenty of patience :)

Thank you all for your help and Happy Holidays.

We have chatted and we would really like to work on the recycling program. We have thought that we could create an art installation in the Gateway Center, and this project would encourage the 'teens and up' to think about where they have come from and where they are going; thus, to realize their goals. We have asked Terre Wisell, who is is involved in the Gateway Center, if this could be possible, and she loves the idea! The art work would be displayed in the center, with people invited to the opening, and hopefully this would encourage the young adults who participated to enroll in WCC etc.

When we went Leake and Watts Center we realized that the children in the center have no planning about what they are going to do in future. Hopefully this project as a whole will encourage them to do something in future. Appreciation of their work in the community will also encourage them to contribute more to the society. Not only that as what ever they will make is out of the recylable material they will show everyone that we can create some useful thing out of it if we just give some time.

Every Thursday evening we are going to be teaching there; we're furthermore taking care of the tools and the fliers for the worker's protection. Everything else will remain as we previously discussed, with the 'Global Peace Festival' (on campus) and the newspaper article as means of informing people about our project and motivating them to do acts of kindness upon others as well.

Sorry for the late post! ='(

Update

Today, Stephanie is meeting up with the program co-ordinator at Carver Center. We are working out the dates as to when we can work with the children. Right now, our tentative dates are Saturday afternoons starting the end of March.

Syllabus for "Peter and the Wolf"--coming along nicely. Working on the 5th choreography, 4 more to go! In terms of carrying this project forward, we've approached the music and dance faculty at WCC (Professors Delgado and Robbins) and they have supported us and agreed that this will be an excellent project to keep going every summer. Stephanie and I will be working on fliers that will be posted in the AAB building with sign up sheets for the program. We are excited to work with students from WCC in this music-dance production. It's a lot of work and pretty time consuming but we know that it's for a good cause and know that the benefits and appreciation of music and dance will impact these children for a long time.

This is a link of the piano accompaniment to the dance choreography for the production. Unfortunately, the only one I could find on YouTube that was remotely close was with a Japanese commentary!! Ours will be in English, of course. ;)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxrZToe6BMY

Food Drive--The congregation at Living Word Christian Church in White Plains will be bringing in food on March 29th. Stephanie and I will then bring the food over to Carver Center and help in the distribution of it. Carver Center has expressed a need in this area and we are glad to be a part of it.
